More and more non-EU doctors

After hotels, restaurants and stores, Ukrainian is also increasingly heard in medical facilities and hospitals. For already more than 3,000 doctors from outside the European Union have received permission to practice in Poland, and most of them are medics from war-affected Ukraine. This is the information provided by Health Minister Adam Niedzielski. - Most are medics from war-affected Ukraine. The predominant specialties of doctors who apply to the Health Ministry are family medicine, pediatrics, internal diseases, and general surgery, Minister Niedzielski wrote.

Under the law passed in late 2020, non-EU doctors are hired in a simplified manner. Non-EU medics no longer need to nostrify their diploma and complete the required internship. It is enough that they have at least five years of documented medical studies and a specialist degree. It is also necessary to have at least three years of professional practice, completed in the last five years before coming to Poland.

It is no longer necessary to pass an exam to verify language skills, a declaration of use of the Polish language is sufficient. The candidate must provide the health ministry with a translated document on the specialization program from the university he or she graduated from, as well as a diploma confirmed by a Polish Consul from the country. Also necessary is an appropriate written declaration of willingness to work in the profession. For this to be possible it is necessary to have the approval of the Ministry of Health to practice the profession in our country. Also necessary is a decision of the district medical council granting the right to undertake medical practice.

Support from medics from outside the European Union makes it possible to supplement the number of doctors who have decided to leave Poland permanently. Throughout last year, the Supreme Medical Chamber issued 286 certificates of ethical standing issued to doctors and dentists seeking recognition of qualifications in other European Union countries. In 2020, there were 279 such certificates. Before the coronavirus pandemic, there were 352 in 2019 and 378 in 2018. The largest number of people wanted to practice the medical profession outside Poland in 2005 - 1,711 certificates were taken then. It may be worrying that only by June 30, 2022, the Supreme Medical Council received as many as 445 applications for certificates signifying the decision of another doctor to leave.
